Social Listening: Shein

Shein is a fast fashion online clothing store that most of this generation of young women order cheap in style clothes and accessories from. All throughout the pandemic TikTok videos have been going viral of women doing Shein clothing hauls since the items are so cheap and affordable for many. I myself have been spending countless hours watching these clothing haul videos and ordering items I see from their website. Shein's value proposition is selling cheap and affordable in style clothing that appeals to the younger teen generation.

Things people have been saying about Shein on TikTok:

"Fast fashion companies like Shein wreck our environment & mistreat their workers."

"I was gonna say $200 is a lot but then I saw how much stuff you got and thought about it, at a mall I'd get a quarter of that for $200."

"I ordered stuff from Shein and I'm obsessed."

Shein has been stealing the show for being one of the cheapest, up to date, and efficient online clothing stores today. Consumers are dazzled by the decent quality items they receive for such an affordable price compared to big chain stores such as Victoria Secret, Nike etc. Although it has become very popular there is an opposing side of people who do not support Shein. Many believe Shein is not following labor laws and their productions ruin the environment. Shein is using social media to promote their company and they have created such a good service that customers are promoting there products more than they are now. With all of the TikTok videos going viral, many of Shein's clothing items and accessories are being shared and promoted which influences other to buy. Their brand recognition is building rapidly especially during the pandemic since many retail stores have had limited opening. Online shopping has grown and Shein is benefiting greatly and reflecting themselves onto the younger and growing generation.

While being accused of not following labor laws and having child labor, Shein states on their website under their social responsibility this,

Shein has included on their website, their social responsibility and have addressed that they follow all labor laws and treat their employees fairly and ethically. Including this in their website was a good decision because now when people go to shop they can also feel comfort in seeing that Shein has stated that they do follow all labor laws. This is exactly how I would respond to customers if I were the brand manager because there are minimal people stating these negative claims about Shein vs those who actually support the company. By putting their facts clearly stated on their website this gives just the right amount of awareness and settlement to the situation without blowing it into a big ordeal or having it out with customers. I learned that you can easily address negative comments without creating drama or a high rise of issues within your company.
